Threads, a new social media platform owned by Meta, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 100 million sign-ups within just five days of its launch.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed this impressive growth, attributing it to organic user adoption. Notably, Threads has outpaced ChatGPT as the fastest online platform to reach this milestone.
Rapid User Growth Tracked on Instagram
The user count for Threads can be observed within the Instagram app, which monitors the size of the Threads userbase. The platform experienced an immediate surge in popularity, with 2 million users joining within the first two hours of its launch.
The user base continued to expand steadily, reaching 5 million, 10 million, 30 million, and eventually 70 million users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed delight, stating that the launch has far exceeded their expectations.
Threads: Not an Attempt to Replace Twitter
Contrary to speculation, Meta does not have a specific agenda to replace Twitter. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, emphasized that the company does not aim to promote politics or hard news actively on the platform.
However, Threads could potentially become a go-to destination for conversation-based social media. Mosseri expressed enthusiasm about the launch week’s success, but also acknowledged the uncertainty regarding user retention.
Twitter’s Userbase and Reaction
As of July last year, Twitter boasted nearly 240 million monetizable daily active users. However, recent data from web analytics companies suggests a decline in usage since then.
In response to Threads’ emergence, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino mentioned the platform’s recent “largest usage day” since February, without disclosing specific details.
Elon Musk, who recently took over Twitter, has mocked Threads and threatened legal action against Meta, claiming the use of trade secrets and confidential information in developing the app.
Future updates and Personalization
Threads has shared details about its feed, which includes a mix of content from accounts users follow and recommended creators who have gained popularity on Instagram.
The platform plans to introduce more personalized recommendations in the future. Additionally, for users interested in a chronological feed, Threads has confirmed that they are actively working on implementing this feature.
On the accomplishment of the Threads app, Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, said:
In just five days, Threads has reached an astonishing 100 million sign-ups. It’s a mind-boggling achievement that’s difficult to comprehend. Our team has been working tirelessly, knowing that this is only the beginning. Our motto is ‘make it work, make it great, make it grow.’ We may have done things out of order, but we are determined to make Threads great.
