Threads to implement rate limits like Twitter to combat bots

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced that the Threads platform will be limiting the visibility of posts for certain users due to an increase in spam attacks. This action mirrors a similar approach taken by Twitter earlier this month.

Elon Musk reacts to Threads limitation

Elon Musk, known for his controversial Twitter decisions and lack of moderation on the platform, faced criticism for limiting the visibility of tweets to combat spam. In response to Mosseri’s announcement, Musk humorously posted, “Lmaooo Copy 🐈 [cat].”

Initially, Musk stated that the rate limits on Twitter were temporary, particularly at extreme levels. However, he has since relaxed these limits, allowing users, particularly Twitter Blue subscribers and verified accounts, to view more tweets per day.

However, the duration of the rate limits on Threads, Instagram’s companion app, remains unspecified.

Threads offers support for users experiencing limitation issues

In contrast to Twitter’s strict post limitations, Mosseri suggests that users should reach out for assistance if they encounter similar problems on Threads. This indicates that the Threads team is willing to collaborate with legitimate users to ensure a positive user experience.

However, several users have expressed concerns about increased comment spam, with some noting that nearly half of their posts receive responses from bots.

Threads app rapid growth and privacy concerns

Threads, achieved the milestone of 100 million users within just five days of its launch, surpassing other apps in terms of speed. However, unless the issue of bots and spam is effectively addressed, Threads could face challenges similar to Twitter.

Additionally, the app is currently unavailable for download in Europe due to data privacy regulations enforced by the European Union.

Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, announced the update by posting on Threads:

Due to an increase in spam attacks, we are tightening our rate limits. This may result in unintentional limitations on active users (false positives). If you are affected by these protections, please let us know.
