Threads, the Twitter rival launched by Instagram two weeks ago, has received an update introducing new features. The app’s developer, Cameron Roth, shared a post on Threads, announcing the latest additions to the iOS app.
This update follows the recent announcement of implementing rate limits on the Threads app, similar to Twitter, to combat bot activity on its platform.
Threads Follows Tab: Not Exactly a Following-Only Feed
One of the new features is the “follows” tab, although it’s not the following-only feed that users have been requesting. This tab can be found on the app’s activity page and allows users to view a list of accounts that have recently followed them.
Previously, Threads displayed recent followers in the “all” tab on the activity page, so this change simply makes it easier to locate new followers. Moreover, the app offers two additional filters, “quotes” and “reposts,” which allow users to sort their recent activity by those who have quoted or reposted their threads.
Translations for Improved Accessibility
Threads is also introducing translations, which can be useful for users who follow people from different countries. Although the option may not be visible to all users yet, according to Roth, the feature will appear below a post, alongside the like, reply, repost, and share buttons.
Other Minor Changes and Platform Limitations
Threads still lacks several key features such as a chronological feed, direct messaging, and hashtags. Additionally, users cannot remove themselves from Threads without deleting their Instagram account, and there is no web version yet.
Despite these limitations, Meta is taking steps to address concerns. However, Threads is currently unavailable in Europe due to data privacy regulations, and the company has announced that it is blocking Europeans from accessing Threads via VPN.
Availability
At present, it seems like the update is being rolled out to Threads iOS app. If these changes are not immediately visible, Roth suggests restarting the app or waiting until the end of the day. There is no clear timeline for when these updates will be available for Android users.
