Pegatron plans expansion of iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu: Report

Taiwanese technology giant Pegatron Corporation is planning to expand its manufacturing base in Tamil Nadu, India, according to a report from Deccan Herald. The company’s chairman, T H Tung, indicated during a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin that they are considering expanding their existing facility in the state.

Pegatron, a major supplier to Apple, entered India in 2021 under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and established its unit in Singaperumalkovil, near Chennai, with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore.

The unit, which started operations in September last year, is responsible for assembling flagship iPhones like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, similar to its Taiwanese counterpart Foxconn.

This move by Pegatron to expand in Tamil Nadu aligns with Apple’s earlier announcement of shifting some of its operations out of China to countries like India. During the inauguration of the Singaperumal Koil plant, Chief Minister Stalin had expressed hope for further investments from Pegatron in the state.

A person familiar with the matter stated that Pegatron is in talks to invest more in India and expand its Chennai facility. The existing site is spacious enough to accommodate the expansion, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.

Pegatron is planning to invest more in India. We have been talking to them to ensure that they further invest in Tamil Nadu by expanding their Chennai facility. Today’s meeting has set the tone for further talks between the two sides. We can expect forward movement in the coming months.

This development holds significant implications for India’s manufacturing sector, as it may attract more investment and generate employment opportunities. With Pegatron’s proposed expansion in Tamil Nadu, India’s position in the global technology manufacturing landscape is likely to strengthen further.
