Adani Data Networks and Vodafone Idea have sought an extension from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the deadline to launch 5G services, as reported by financialexpress.
Adani Group’s Challenge – Deploying 5G Network
Adani Group is facing hurdles in deploying a 5G network in the 26 GHz band for its captive networks. This has prompted the company to request an extension for meeting the minimum obligation.
On the other hand, Vodafone Idea’s 5G services launch has been delayed due to funding limitations. The company is currently unable to fulfill its minimum rollout obligation and has requested additional time.
The DoT has confirmed that it has received extension requests from companies regarding their 5G rollout obligations. The requests are currently under examination.
Vodafone Idea’s Progress and Plans
Vodafone Idea is in the testing phase of its 5G services in cities like Delhi and Pune. Currently, the company has deployed 36 tower sites, and the commercial deployment will commence after finalizing equipment orders.
Vodafone Idea is dedicated to expanding its 4G coverage and capacity, especially in its 17 priority circles, despite the delay in the launch of 5G. The company intends to introduce 5G services once it has secured sufficient funding.
Status of Other Operators’ 5G Deployment
Both Bharti Airtel and Jio have not yet deployed 5G networks in the 26 GHz band, primarily due to the lack of a supportive device ecosystem.
According to the guidelines set by the government, it is mandatory for telecom operators to launch 5G services in both metro and non-metro circles, which entails providing services in a minimum of one area in metro circles and one city in non-metro circles.
According to data from the DoT as of July 2, Jio and Airtel have made significant strides, deploying a total of 275,256 5G BTS (base transceiver station) in over 6,200 towns.
On the development of the 5G rollout deadline, Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman stated:
At this point in time, we are examining several requests from companies for an extension of the minimum 5G rollout obligation.
On the launch of 5G, Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra commented,
The Minimum rollout obligation (MRO) is more of a compliance requirement, and we will work on that, but our focus is on achieving wider coverage.
