In a recent report, we covered the development of Samsung’s latest wearable device, the Galaxy Ring, a smart ring that comes with advanced health monitoring features.
Now, Samsung Electronics is considering the possibility of mass-producing this innovative smart ring. As per a new report from The Elec, the decision regarding mass production is likely to be finalized in August or possibly even earlier.
Development and Medical Device Approval
The Galaxy Ring is currently in the preliminary development stage, where domestic and foreign parts makers are working on materializing the concept.
The thickness and performance of the required parts are being carefully considered during this process. The results of this development review will be presented to Noh Tae-moon, president of the MX division at Samsung Electronics.
If the mass production is approved, the actual product development can begin. However, even if the decision is made in August, the Galaxy Ring may not be released immediately.
Similar to the Galaxy Watch, the device would require medical device approval after product development, a process that typically takes 7 to 8 months for development and 10 to 12 months for approval.
Samsung Electronics will need to demonstrate that the Galaxy Ring complies with the requirements set forth by regulatory authorities and does not pose any risks to users. This includes ensuring that the smart ring functions accurately, reliably, and securely in monitoring various health parameters.
More about Samsung Galaxy Ring
The Galaxy Ring is designed to work with XR devices and aims to offer improved body information measurement accuracy compared to the Galaxy Watch. It is expected to feature various sensors for collecting body and health information, which users can access through a smartphone app for monitoring purposes.
The Galaxy Ring is expected to outperform smartwatches in terms of data accuracy, especially for sleep and health-related information. Its snug fit on the finger is likely to reduce measurement errors compared to loosely worn smartwatches.
The release date of the Galaxy Ring is uncertain at this stage, and it is yet to be determined whether it will be positioned as a wellness product or pursue medical device approval like the Galaxy Watch. However, reports say that if the Ring achieves certification, it could be ready by next year.
