Google adds Images and Videos to Generative AI Overviews

Google has introduced the latest updates to its Generative AI-powered Search Experience (SGE), which provides users with easier and more visual ways to access information.

These updates aim to enhance the overall search experience and offer users quick and efficient access to relevant information. Earlier in May, Google opened access to Search Labs with Generative AI capabilities.

Visual Enhancements for Better Understanding

Google’s SGE now includes more images and videos in its overviews, providing users with a quick reference and relevant information on their search topics. For instance, searching for “tiniest birds of prey” will display images of the bird along with web-based information.

Additionally, users can expect to see videos for certain topics, such as yoga poses or marble stain removal, enhancing their search experience.

Faster AI-Powered Overviews

Google understands the importance of quick access to information. To cater to this need, they have made significant improvements, reducing the time it takes to generate AI overviews by half.

Users can now get their desired information faster than before, and Google promises to continue refining its processes for even faster responses in the future.

Exploring Further with Updated Links

Each AI overview now includes links to relevant search results, allowing users to delve deeper into their interests. To provide more context, Google has added publish dates to these links, helping users gauge the recency of the information from the linked pages.

Google is also experimenting with easier ways to find web pages that support information in AI overviews, ensuring a comprehensive and up-to-date search experience.

Availability

Google has stated that its latest updates can be accessed and experimented with today in Search Labs, available through the Google app on Android and iOS, as well as on the Chrome desktop browser.

Announcing the updates, Hema Budaraju, Senior Director, Product Management, Search, said:

Updates to our AI-powered overviews provide users with more intuitive and visually appealing ways to locate and understand information. We are continually striving to enhance this experience in both significant and subtle ways.
