Google expands Generative AI Experience in Search to India and Japan

Google has introduced its generative AI experience in Search (SGE) to a broader audience, now accessible in Japan and India. Earlier this month, Google added Images and Videos to Generative AI Overviews as well.

AI in Search for More People

Users in India and Japan can now utilize generative AI features in their local languages. They can input queries through typing or speaking. In India, there’s an added feature – a language toggle, enabling multilingual users to switch between English and Hindi easily.

Additionally, Indian users have the option to listen to responses, which is a popular choice. Throughout the page, dedicated ad slots will continue to display Search ads.

Learning from Initial Experiments

Google has observed positive outcomes since introducing generative AI in Search. Users, especially those aged 18-24, have shown high satisfaction levels.

They appreciate the ability to ask follow-up questions conversationally, and find suggested follow-ups helpful for refining searches. People are asking more detailed and conversational questions, thanks to the assistance of generative AI, the company said.

Enhanced Search Experience

The generative AI experience enriches the search process by offering a range of perspectives. It acts as a starting point for exploring web content.

Google has been experimenting with ways to make it easier for users to discover and access web pages that support the information in AI-generated summaries. To enhance usability, links to relevant web pages will be presented within the AI-powered overview itself.

Simpler Access to Relevant Information

When you encounter an arrow icon next to information in an AI-generated summary, you can click on it to access relevant web pages that provide more details.

This feature is initially launching in the U.S. and will gradually become available in Japan and India. The company aims to prioritize approaches that continue to drive traffic to relevant websites.

Availability

Starting this week, the generative AI experience in Google Search is being rolled out to users in India and Japan through Search Labs. Google plans to extend this offering to more countries in the future.

It is available through the Google app on Android and iOS, as well as on the Chrome desktop browser.

Announcing the updates, Hema Budaraju, Senior Director, Product Management, Search, said:

In recent months, we’ve been trying out adding special AI abilities to Search. People have tested these abilities in Search Labs and given us valuable feedback. We’ve improved these abilities by including videos, pictures, local details, and travel suggestions in the responses.

And now, we’re making this special AI experience in Search available to more people. We’re starting in India and Japan, where users can explore Search Labs and enjoy the benefits of our generative AI features.
