Apple has introduced its first-ever carbon-neutral products with the latest Apple Watch lineup. These innovations in design and clean energy have resulted in a remarkable 75% reduction in product emissions for each carbon-neutral Apple Watch.
Towards Apple’s 2030 Carbon Neutrality Goal
This achievement is a significant step toward Apple’s ambitious goal to make all its products carbon-neutral by 2030, including the entire supply chain and the entire life cycle of each device.
In line with the Apple 2030 initiative and broader environmental efforts:
Leather-Free Products: Apple has ceased the use of leather in all its product lines, replacing it with a sustainable material called FineWoven.
Sustainable Packaging: The new Apple Watch lineup features 100% fiber-based packaging, moving towards a plastic-free packaging goal by 2025.
Recycled Materials: Apple continues to increase its use of recycled materials in products like iPhone, achieving substantial emissions reductions.
Grid Forecast Tool: Apple has introduced the Grid Forecast tool in the Home app to help users identify cleaner energy sources and make eco-friendly choices. The Grid Forecast will be accessible across the entire mainland United States.
Apple’s Carbon Reduction Strategy
Apple’s approach to decarbonization prioritizes reducing emissions from electricity, materials, and transportation across the product life cycle. Carbon credits from nature-based projects are used to offset any remaining emissions.
All carbon-neutral Apple Watch models meet strict criteria, including clean electricity, recycled materials, and reduced air transportation. They are certified by SCS Global Services.
Investing in Clean Energy and Innovations in Design
Apple is committed to clean energy and collaborates with suppliers to transition to 100% renewable electricity. The company supports large-scale solar and wind projects and advocates for clean energy policies.
Apple incorporates recycled and renewable materials in its products to reduce environmental impact. The company’s commitment extends to materials like FineWoven, recycled metals, and yarn from discarded fishing nets.
Reducing Transportation Emissions and High-Quality Carbon Removal
Apple reduces transportation emissions by shifting to less carbon-intensive shipping modes and optimizing packaging for efficiency.
Apple plans to offset residual emissions with high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects, promoting carbon removal critical for addressing climate change.
Apple’s Beyond 2030 goal
Apple is working towards a 90% reduction in emissions by 2050 and advocates for collective action to combat climate change. To learn about Apple’s 2030 climate target and the environmental effects of their products, visit apple.com/2030.
Commenting on the Apple 2030 goal, Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives., said:
At Apple, we are steadfast and proven leaders in combating climate change. Our emphasis on renewable energy and low-carbon design has led to significant reductions in emissions, setting industry standards. We’re not hitting the brakes on this progress. We’ve reached a significant landmark by making the world’s most sought-after watch carbon neutral. We pledge to continue innovating to address the pressing demands of our time.
