WhatsApp for Android gets Passkeys support

In a bid to enhance security, WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature that allows Android users to set up a passwordless passkey. This feature comes after a successful beta test conducted about a month ago.

Google has also made a recent announcement that it will be adopting passkeys as the default login method for personal accounts.

What’s a Passkey?

A passkey is a short combination of numbers or characters that confirms your identity and ensures that only authorized devices can access your WhatsApp account. You can use your device’s face recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN to set it up.

How to Create a Passkey

1. Go to your WhatsApp settings.
2. Tap on “Passkeys” and select “Create a passkey.”
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
4. You may be prompted to use your device’s screen lock.

This feature is especially useful if you have trouble logging into your account. Instead of relying on a traditional password, you can use your biometric data to verify your identity.

Requirements for Passkey Setup

To set up a passkey, make sure you have an Android device running version 9 or later, a linked Google account, and a lock screen enabled. Also, ensure you have the latest version of Google Play Store installed.

Note: If you’re reinstalling WhatsApp and already have a passkey, you might be asked if you want to use it during registration.

Availability

WhatsApp will gradually roll out passkey support for Android users in the coming weeks and months. Unfortunately, there’s no information yet regarding passkey support for iPhone users.

Announcing the availability, WhatsApp posted on X (formerly Twitter):

Android users can now effortlessly and securely regain access with passkeys 🔑 – only your face, fingerprint, or PIN unlocks your WhatsApp account.
