To achieve a slim and lightweight foldable phone, OnePlus invested heavily in mechanical design and material selection. The pivotal advancement here is the Flexion hinge, featuring a “water-drop” shape that reduces the number of hinge components from around 100 to just 69. This reduction in components drastically cuts the hinge’s weight and overall device weight.
Material choices, including the innovative Sony LYTIA-T808 camera sensor and aerospace-grade materials such as titanium alloy and reinforced carbon fiber, further contribute to the device’s lightweight and durability. The single-spine hinge architecture enhances strength, ensuring a robust build.
Minimal and Invisible Crease
The OnePlus Open minimizes the common issue of screen creases seen in foldable phones. A carefully designed Flexion Hinge allows the screen to fold almost flat, reducing the appearance of a crease without adding to the device’s thickness. This technology also spreads pressure evenly and reduces wear on the hinge, making the crease virtually imperceptible.
Micro-incisions in the carbon fiber display support structure reduce pressure during folding, further mitigating the crease’s appearance. The combined efforts result in a dramatically improved Flexion hinge that maintains the main display’s integrity even after extensive use.
Thinner Alert Slider
OnePlus’s signature feature, the Alert Slider, is also present on OnePlus Open. They optimized its design to fit the foldable form, making it more convenient for one-handed use. Inside the phone, they reduced the module’s size, saving valuable internal space.
