Google Play Store to require users to easily report offensive AI-generated content

Google is taking steps to enhance the quality, safety, and privacy of apps on the Android platform with updates to its developer policies. These changes aim to create a more secure and trustworthy environment for users.

Ensuring Safe Generative AI Apps

One significant update focuses on the use of generative AI models within apps. In the interest of responsible AI practices, Google will require developers to enable the reporting or flagging of offensive AI-generated content within the app. This ensures that users can provide feedback on potentially harmful content without leaving the application.

This move aligns with Google’s commitment to providing safe AI experiences while maintaining compliance with other developer policies prohibiting the generation of restricted content.

Expanding Privacy Protections

Privacy protection is another key area of improvement. Google is implementing stricter requirements for app permissions related to photos and videos.

Under the new policy, apps will only be allowed to access such files when they directly relate to app functionality. One-time or infrequent access requests will be directed to use system pickers, like the Android photo picker, enhancing user data security.

Limiting Disruptive Notifications

Additionally, the policy updates address disruptive notifications. Google is introducing limitations and special access permissions for full-screen intent notifications, ensuring they are used for high-priority scenarios, such as alarms and calls. Apps targeting Android 14 and above will need consent for full-screen intent notification access, unless their core functionality requires it.

These policy changes reaffirm Google’s dedication to a secure, high-quality Android ecosystem. Developers are urged to align their apps with these guidelines for a better ecosystem. For more details, check out Google’s help center article.
