X, previously known as Twitter, had previously announced plans to add audio and video calls. Now, with the latest X app update, the social network owned by Elon Musk is introducing these features to select users.
A user, DogeDesigner (@cb_doge), shared a screenshot that explained how to activate it in the app’s settings and displayed options for enabling voice and video calls for contacts in your address book, verified users, and people you follow. Elon Musk confirmed this as an early version of video and audio calling on X by responding to the user’s post.
Some users noticed this feature in the app’s direct message section, although there was no official announcement. The app encourages users to “take messaging to the next level” by offering audio and video calls. Users can choose whether to allow calls from their address book, people they follow, or verified users.
There’s also a setting to enable or disable audio and video calls with different groups. To make a call, users can open a direct message with another user, click the phone icon in the top right corner, and select either an audio or video call.
While X hasn’t made an official announcement, they teased the feature with a cryptic message saying, “ready for it…?” This aligns with Elon Musk’s hints about adding audio and video calls to X as part of his vision to transform it into an all-in-one app. He confirmed that this feature will be available on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC without the need for a phone number.
It’s unclear how widely these features have been rolled out or if non-Premium users can access them. In a recent report earlier this month, Elon Musk mentioned the upcoming launch of two new X Premium subscription tiers, one with all features but ads and another with no ads at a higher cost.
