Google expands Generative AI Experience in Search to over 120 countries with new updates

Google is taking generative AI in Search to over 120 new countries and territories, including Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

This expansion also introduces support for four additional languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian.

Easier Follow-up Questions

Google is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to ask follow-up questions directly from the search results page. This enhancement aims to provide a more natural way for users to seek additional information or delve deeper into a topic.

Enhanced Translation Assistance

Generative AI in Search aims to add clarity to translations. When translating phrases that might have multiple meanings, users will see underlined terms. Tapping on these words allows users to specify the intended meaning, reducing ambiguity in translations.

Definitions for Coding and Health Information

Google is extending the interactive definition feature to more areas, including coding and health information. Relevant searches will highlight specific words, allowing users to preview their definitions or view related images.

Availability and Updates
  • Ask Follow-up Questions: Rolling out in the coming weeks in English in the United States, with continuous improvements.
  • AI-powered Translation: Coming soon to the United States for English-to-Spanish translations, with plans for expansion to more countries and languages.
  • Showing Definitions for Coding and Health Information: Rolling out over the next month in English in the United States, with more countries and languages to follow.

Search Labs, offering early-stage experiments on Search, is accessible through the Google app (Android and iOS) and Chrome desktop.

Announcing the updates, Hema Budaraju, Senior Director, Product Management, Search, said:

As we’ve enhanced the user experience, we’ve extended our reach beyond the United States, recently launching in India and Japan. The positive feedback from all three countries highlights the value of generative AI, especially for tackling complex questions.

In our most significant global expansion to date, we’re introducing generative AI in Search to over 120 new countries and territories, now supporting four additional languages. With initial upgrades launching in the U.S., we aim to make SGE more interactive and user-friendly during your search.
