Google Bard gets Gemini Pro AI model integration, takes on GPT 4

In the December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop, Google unveiled Gemini, its highly versatile AI model. Designed to operate seamlessly across devices, including data centers and smartphones, Gemini comes in three sizes—Ultra, Pro, and Nano. With advanced multimodal reasoning capabilities, it plays a key role in Bard’s major upgrade.

Bard, Google’s AI language model, is set to integrate Gemini in two phases. The initial phase incorporates a specifically tuned version of Gemini Pro in English, enhancing reasoning, planning, and understanding capabilities.

The subsequent phase, Bard Advanced, scheduled for early next year, will introduce Gemini Ultra, offering access to the most advanced models and capabilities.

Gemini Pro excels in performance, surpassing industry benchmarks by outperforming GPT-3.5 in six out of eight benchmarks, including crucial standards like MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding) and GSM8K, a key metric for evaluating large AI models and measuring grade school math reasoning, said the company.

The incorporation of Gemini Pro into Bard has yielded substantial enhancements, establishing Bard as the preferred free chatbot in blind evaluations. To showcase its capabilities, Google has collaborated with YouTuber Mark Rober, using Bard with Gemini Pro to craft the most accurate paper airplane.

Users can now experience Bard with Gemini Pro for text-based prompts, with support for additional modalities coming soon. Initially available in English across more than 170 countries and territories, it will expand to other languages and regions in the near future.

Bard Advanced coming soon…
Gemini Ultra’s Text-Based Benchmarks

Gemini Ultra, tailored for intricate tasks and swift understanding of diverse information types such as text, images, audio, video, and code, will be accessible via Bard Advanced. Google is in the final stages of conducting thorough safety checks and plans to initiate a trusted tester program shortly before making Bard Advanced available to a broader audience in early next year.

Google prioritizes safety and aims to make Bard the best AI collaborator globally, ensuring continuous improvements based on user feedback. Try Bard with Gemini Pro today to explore the latest AI advancements.

Regarding the introduction of Gemini, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet said,

Now, we’re taking the next step on our journey with Gemini, our most capable and general model yet, with state-of-the-art performance across many leading benchmarks. Our first version, Gemini 1.0, is optimized for different sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano. These are the first models of the Gemini era and the first realization of the vision we had when we formed Google DeepMind earlier this year. This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we’ve undertaken as a company. I’m genuinely excited for what’s ahead, and for the opportunities Gemini will unlock for people everywhere.
