Apple to revamp iPad lineup in 2024 to boost sales: Report

Apple is planning a revamp of its iPad lineup in 2024, aiming to simplify choices and boost sales, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Initially, the iPad lineup had two main models, but over time, more options were added, leading to confusion for consumers.

Currently, Apple sells five main iPads, each with marginal differences in features and screen sizes, making it challenging for customers to decide.

Changes in the Pro and Air Models

To address this, Apple aims to streamline the iPad lineup, taking inspiration from the more straightforward Mac lineup. The plan includes reducing confusion between the iPad Pro and Air.

The Pro will undergo significant changes with an OLED screen, updated design, M3 chip, and a revamped Magic Keyboard attachment, positioning it as the highest-end model. The iPad Air, with 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch configurations and an M2 processor, will be a notable improvement over the standard iPad.

Apple plans to release the new Pro and Air models around March, coinciding with the launch of the 11th generation iPad. The company will phase out the ninth generation iPad with a home button and large bezels. The iPad mini will also receive an update with a faster processor.

Although streamlining to just the Pro and Air models would simplify the lineup, Apple needs a cheaper model for the education market and wants to retain the iPad mini for users who prefer a smaller tablet.

Apple’s Upcoming Releases: M3 MacBook Air models and Vision Pro

Gurman also mentions Apple’s plan to release M3 MacBook Airs in a few months, featuring 3-nanometer chip. The move is likely targeted at users of older MacBook Air models, rather than those with the recently released M2 chip.

In addition to the iPad and MacBook updates, Apple is gearing up for the release of the Vision Pro headset. Training sessions for retail employees are scheduled for mid-January, emphasizing the complex customization process required for each user.

The Vision Pro is expected to be a U.S. only product initially, with appointments required for in-store purchases. Apple aims to release the Vision Pro by early 2024, potentially before March.

Future Changes and Challenges

Gurman highlighted that a crucial question is whether this simplification will revive the tablet category. While new models at higher prices may boost short-term revenue, the long-term success of iPads remains uncertain, especially with the upcoming competition from touch-screen MacBooks in a few years.
