Corning to setup display glass manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu: Report

Corning, an American multinational technology company specializing in specialty glass, ceramics, and related materials, plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. Multiple sources regarding the matter have been reported to the Economic Times.

Corning, a key Apple supplier, is known for its famous product, Corning Gorilla Glass, which is widely used by many smartphone OEMs. A few months ago, it announced a joint venture with Optiemus Infracom to set up India’s first manufacturing facility for producing high-quality finished cover glass parts for the mobile consumer electronics industry.

According to the report, the plant will be set up at Pillaipakkam, near Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on a 25-acre plot, which will be expanded if the need arises, and will employ around 300 people. It is said that the firm chose Tamil Nadu over Telangana due to the state’s growing electronic ecosystem, and closeness to other Apple suppliers.

A few months ago, Minister of Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed that Corning would start finishing display glass in India by 2024, with a 30 million-piece capacity initially.

The latest report is in line with Apple’s plan to bring its key suppliers to India. Further, it appears to be beneficial for Tamil Nadu, which is receiving a lot of investment in electronic manufacturing and assembly and is expected to play an important role in Apple’s production facilities in India.
