Samsung is massively betting on AI for the Galaxy S24 Series launch, such that the entire launch event had Galaxy AI at the heart of it. The Galaxy S24 is the first mobile device to have Artificial Intelligence as a core offering as Samsung seeks to make the most of its first-mover advantage.
On the sidelines of the Galaxy S24 launch, FoneArena spoke to Sally Jeong, Executive Vice President of Framework R&D team at Samsung Electronics who leads the development team for S Pen, Multi-Tasking, multiple Samsung services as well as Android platforms.
“The Galaxy S24 marks the beginning of our Galaxy AI journey. We aim to give Samsung Galaxy users the best AI powered experience and help them achieve their goals in an easier, better and secure way.” added Ms. Jeong who has been working at Samsung for over 26 years.
While the AI advancements packed into the S24 tap the latest tools and technologies, the company started working on AI back in 2017 with the Galaxy S8, and it was GPU-based and improved on it with the Galaxy S20 which was NPU-based.
The current architecture can accommodate Samsung’s in-house AI model, Google’s Gemini nano on-device AI model and is designed to be extendable, shares Ms. Jeong as we get a closer look at what happens behind the scenes when the AI features come to life. The architecture has grown from supporting just 10 AI models to over 100 models on the Galaxy S24.
We sense a really strong collaboration between Samsung and Google as the S24 harnesses the power of Cloud based AI using Google Gemini Pro for improving productivity. Imagen 2 is used for generative AI in photo editing. Circle to Search which lets you search the web by circling any object on your phone’s screen debuted first on the Galaxy S24.
Galaxy AI offers several AI features including Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, Chat Assist and Transcript Assist which aim to improve productivity. It also offers Generative AI-powered photo editing features.
Samsung sells the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powered S24 Ultra in India and Exynos-powered S24 and S24+ in several markets, including India. On the topic of any difference in real world AI experience between Snapdragon NPU based variant and Exynos NPU variant, Samsung shared that there wouldn’t be any fundamental differences and that there is strong collaboration between Samsung, Google and Qualcomm for providing a consistent experience to users.
Samsung aims to bring Galaxy AI to 100 million Galaxy devices by 2024 as the company plans to bring the feature to older devices via updates.
