According to Android Authority, the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 might not use the Tensor G3 and could have more RAM for better on-device AI task performance.
Google has been testing the Pixel Fold 2 internally for a few months. Earlier prototypes had Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, nicknamed “zuma,” but recent ones have the rumored Tensor G4 chipset, nicknamed “zumapro.” This change suggests the Pixel Fold 2 might come with the Tensor G4 instead of the G3, but it’s not confirmed.
The Pixel Tablet also went through a similar change, using the second-generation Tensor G2 chipset instead of the first-generation, so the same could happen with the Pixel Fold 2 (codenamed “comet”). If Google changes the chipset, it might also change the launch timing.
The original Pixel Fold was revealed in May 2023 at Google I/O, but if the Pixel Fold 2 launches with the Tensor G4, it might not happen at I/O 2024, but we can expect at least a teaser. The Tensor G4 chipset is expected to have slight improvements over the G3.
Rumors suggest it will use Arm’s Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 CPU cores, and might be made by Samsung instead of TSMC. Some Pixel Fold 2 prototypes have 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, an upgrade from last year’s model.
Regarding the launch, the Pixel Fold 2 is currently in the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stage, a few steps away from Mass Production (MP), so it might not be ready for a May launch. Further details on storage variants and other specifications may emerge closer to the launch date.
