Amazon India today announced that there’s been a significant increase in the usage of smart home devices connected to Alexa, doubling in the last three years.
Alexa has become a familiar part of Indian households for six years now, simplifying daily tasks and making homes smarter.
These devices, like Echo smart speakers and Fire TV Stick, have been purchased by customers across 99% of pin codes in India, spanning both metro and non-metro cities.
Increased Adoption of Smart Home Devices
Millions of users across the country have embraced Alexa, with around 80% of smart home users starting their journey with an Echo smart speaker bundled with a smart bulb.
Requests to Alexa for controlling compatible smart home appliances have also doubled in the last three years, including commands in English, Hindi, or Hinglish, such as turning on the geyser or dimming lights in the hall.
Controlling lights remains the most common smart home request, but Indian customers are increasingly using Alexa to control smart fans and ACs, showing a 37% increase in usage over the last year.
Innovations in Smart Home Technology
Smart home brands in India are innovating to launch locally relevant smart devices such as tube lights, ceiling fans, IR blasters, and smart strips.
The selection of Alexa-compatible smart home appliances has increased by 12% in the last year, with new products from brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Hindware, and Atomberg.
To make setting up a smart home easier, Amazon has introduced new features and products:
- Redesigned Alexa App: The updated Alexa app makes smart home control easier with features like ‘Favourites’, a ‘Home Shortcuts Bar’, streamlined ‘Activity’ section, and improved search controls.
- Alexa Connect Kit Smart Bulb: Customers can easily set up smart bulbs with the Alexa Connect Kit. Wipro has launched the first RGBW light bulb in India using ACK, supporting Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup.
