Many OEMs use advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels for their smartphones. Apple currently uses this tech only for Pro models and markets as ProMotion technology, and the standard iPhone and Plus model use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) tech. It looks like Apple will bring this display tech to all iPhone 17 models.
According to a report from The Elec, Apple will shift completely to LTPO display technology by the iPhone 17 series, and China-based BOE might become one of the suppliers of it if it fulfills Apple’s expectations.
LTPO display technology, unlike the most popular low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED, consumes lower power by reducing leakage current and supports adaptive refresh rates. This display tech is popular among Android flagships, yet Apple only secures it for Pro models.
The report also suggests that the iPhone 16 series won’t have many differentiating factors from the 15 series, and Apple might bring this advanced display tech to make some compelling changes for the iPhone 17 series.
Even if BOE didn’t satisfy Apple’s expectations for the LTPO display, the supplier might still start to supply LTPS OLED panels to the upcoming iPhone SE4 and other older iPhone models. This will force Apple to procure LTPO supplies from LG and Samsung. Either way, Apple is expected to completely move to LTPO OLED panels by the iPhone 17 series.
