In a recent episode of The Android Show on the Android Developers channel on YouTube, Google confirmed that the Pixel 8 won’t be getting Gemini Nano due to “hardware limitations.”
Gemini Nano is a mobile-friendly version of Google’s new AI model, initially launched on the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung S24 Series for AI features. While the Pixel 8 won’t support Gemini Nano, Google says they are planning to extend its compatibility to more high-end devices soon.
It is noted that the difference between the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro lies in RAM capacity, 8GB and 12GB respectively, crucial for running Gemini Nano. This development coincides with MediaTek Dimensity 8300 and 9300 chipsets’ optimization for Gemini Nano, hinting at possible integration into mid-range non-Google devices.
Despite the Pixel 8’s technical capability to run Gemini Nano, as evidenced by its RAM capacity similar to the entry-level Galaxy S24, Google believes integrating such an intensive model might negatively impact the overall user experience.
Currently, the Pixel 8 Pro exclusively offers AI features utilizing Gemini Nano, including the Recorder app’s summarize tool, Smart Reply in Gboard, Video Boost, Night Sight in Timelapse mode, enhanced portrait light, and improved Photo Unblur.
While this exclusivity sets Pro models apart, the upcoming Pixel 9 is anticipated to feature Gemini Nano, given its potentially superior processor.
