iOS 18 could introduce AI-powered photo retouching, emoji creation, and more

Apple is introducing new AI features in iOS 18 and macOS 15, set to be revealed at WWDC in two weeks.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s AI strategy, called ‘Project Greymatter,’ aims to offer practical tools for everyday users in apps like Safari, Photos, and Notes.

iOS 18 AI features include:
  • AI-powered photo retouching
  • Voice memo transcription
  • Automatic reply suggestions for emails and texts
  • Auto-generated emojis based on message content
  • Improved web search in Safari
  • Enhanced Spotlight search functionality
  • More natural interactions with Siri
  • An advanced version of Siri for Apple Watch
  • Smart recaps of missed notifications and various content

Additionally, users will be able to change app icon colors in iOS 18, such as making social icons blue or finance icons green, which is currently possible only through custom shortcuts. Users will also have more freedom to place apps anywhere on the home screen grid, similar to widgets.

AI features that require less processing power will run on-device, while more demanding ones will operate via the cloud, emphasizing privacy advantages, noted Gurman.

iOS 18 will be unveiled at the WWDC conference on June 10, with a focus on AI features. Many of these new AI tools might be marketed as a “preview” in beta versions before the official launch in September.
