Google Pixel Feature Drop: Gemini Nano to Pixel 8 / 8a, display port support, caller lookup, and more

Google has begun rolling out the June 2024 Feature Drop update, enhancing the capabilities of Pixel phones, Pixel Watches, and Pixel Tablets.

Updates for Pixel Phones

Gemini Nano on Pixel 8 and 8a

The AI model Gemini Nano is now available as a developer option on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a. Enable it through the developer options in your Pixel’s settings.

Enhanced Transcripts with Recorder App

The Recorder app on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 8a now provides detailed, downloadable summaries powered by Gemini.

It can identify speakers by name, improving conversational transcripts. Transcripts can be exported as text files or to Google Docs, simplifying the management of interviews and lectures.

Expanded Display Options

Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro can now connect to larger screens via USB-C, allowing you to enjoy content on a computer monitor.

Locate Your Phone Even When Off

Find My Device can now locate your phone even if it’s turned off or the battery is dead. This feature ensures your location data remains private and encrypted.

Improved Camera Features

The Pixel camera can now automatically select the best moment in HDR+ photos, making it easier to capture focused and smiling faces.

Reverse Phone Number Lookup

You can now perform a reverse phone number search directly from your call log to identify unknown numbers.

Google Wallet Expansion

Google Wallet is now available in India, allowing users to store and access boarding passes, loyalty cards, event tickets, public transport tickets, gift cards, and more.

Additional Camera Control

Pixel’s camera now allows you to manually select which lens to use for photos, giving you more control over your shots.

Updates for Pixel Watches

Car Crash Detection

In time for National Safety Month, Pixel Watch 2 introduces Car Crash Detection. If you’re in a severe car accident, your watch will check if you’re okay and automatically call emergency services if needed.

It integrates with Emergency Sharing to notify your emergency contacts with your real-time location. Additionally, there’s improved Fall Detection for better accuracy, especially for bicycle falls.

Enhanced Payment Options

You can now link your PayPal account to Google Wallet on your Pixel Watch, making it easier to pay without your physical wallet.

Revamped Google Home App

The Google Home app on Wear OS has been updated for quicker access to smart home devices:

  • Access Google Home Favorites with a swipe.
  • Control devices directly from your watch face.
  • Adjust blinds or fan speed from your watch.

Updates for Pixel Tablet

Doorbell Notifications

When docked in hub mode, your Pixel Tablet will now show richer doorbell notifications, including a snapshot of who is at your door. You can use two-way talk or send a Quick Response.

Smart Home Favorites Widget

A new Google Home Favorites widget offers quick access to smart home controls on your phone and tablet home screens, allowing you to adjust your thermostat or lights with a tap.

Availability

These updates are rolling out to all supported Pixel devices running Android 14 starting today, with U.S. carrier software updates following next week. The rollout will continue in phases depending on the carrier and device.
