Tech Mahindra has introduced Project Indus, a foundational model aimed at facilitating communication across diverse Indic languages and dialects on a global scale.
The initial phase focuses on developing a large language model (LLM) tailored specifically for Hindi and its 37+ dialects.
Project Indus: Deployment with GenAI in a Box
Project Indus employs the innovative ‘GenAI in a box’ framework to streamline the deployment of advanced AI models for enterprises.
This framework utilizes Dell Technologies’ high-performance computing solutions, integrating robust storage and networking capabilities. The Indus LLM incorporates Intel-based infrastructure solutions, including Intel Xeon Processors and OneAPI software.
Future enhancements will leverage CPU features like Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions (AMX), facilitating seamless integration of the Indus model into GenAI applications and aligning with evolving AI standards.
Collaboration with Intel
Tech Mahindra’s collaboration with Intel includes utilizing Intel Gaudi AI Accelerators and AI training assets.
This partnership aims to train future generations of Indus models and enhance Tech Mahindra’s workforce expertise in Intel’s hardware and software, empowering global customers across diverse industries.
Industry-Specific Applications
Tech Mahindra aims to redefine AI solutions by developing localized, industry-agnostic LLMs with Dell and Intel’s robust infrastructure.
This initiative will enable tailored applications across sectors such as healthcare, rural education, banking, agriculture, and telecom services, enhancing customer support, user experience, and content creation.
Initially, the Indus model will focus on key use cases such as infrastructure-as-a-service and scalable AI solutions for enterprises. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the global GenAI landscape, projected to grow to $1.3 trillion over the next decade.
Expansion into Bahasa Indonesia
Tech Mahindra has also announced plans to develop an LLM for Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of Indonesia and its dialects, reflecting its commitment to enabling enterprise growth through accessible, scalable, and responsible AI solutions.
Commenting on the announcement, Nikhil Malhotra, Global Head – Makers Lab, Tech Mahindra, stated,
Project Indus represents our pioneering initiative in developing a ground-up LLM. Through Makers Lab, our R&D arm, we meticulously charted a roadmap, gathered insights from the Hindi-speaking community, and constructed the Indus model.
Partnering with Dell Technologies & Intel will empower us to deliver advanced AI solutions, accelerating enterprise scalability. This collaboration aims to reshape the GenAI ecosystem, fostering innovation and operational excellence.
Commenting on the partnership, Santhosh Viswanathan, Vice President & Managing Director – India Region for Intel, said,
