Apple begins iOS 19 development alongside major OS updates for 2025: Report

Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC last month, featuring new home screen capabilities and enhanced Apple Intelligence.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg now reports that Apple has already begun developing iOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, and visionOS 3 for next year.

iOS 19

Gurman states that Apple has “formally begun work on 2025’s major operating systems.” This is consistent with Apple’s usual development timeline. The codenames for the upcoming systems are:

  • iOS 19: “Luck”
  • macOS 16: “Cheer”
  • watchOS 12: “Nepali”
  • visionOS 3: “Discovery”

Although iOS 18, macOS 15 Sequoia, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 are yet to be released, Apple is proceeding with its regular schedule.

Early development is essential as next year’s hardware needs software for testing. However, it is too soon to know the features of the new systems.

Apple Intelligence Coming to Vision Pro – Possibly Next Year

Gurman also reveals that Apple Intelligence will come to the Vision Pro headset, but not to the HomePod. The Vision Pro, with enough memory, will support on-device Apple Intelligence features such as notification summaries, writing tools, and an updated Siri.

Apple’s design team must ensure that Apple Intelligence integrates well into a mixed-reality environment and that sufficient cloud capacity is available.

Gurman notes that the ‌HomePod‌ and HomePod mini, with only one gigabyte of memory, will not receive Apple Intelligence.

Instead, Apple is focusing on “an entirely new robotic device with a display” incorporating Apple Intelligence. The current ‌HomePod‌ is considered “too low-volume a product to waste the engineering time” on integrating this feature.

Looking ahead, Gurman believes Apple Intelligence will become increasingly central to Apple devices and will be updated more frequently than services like iCloud, at least as often as Apple’s hardware and software.

Beta Releases

Public beta versions of ‌iOS 18‌, macOS 15 Sequoia, ‌watchOS 11‌, and ‌visionOS 2‌ are expected next month, with official releases in the fall.
