Meta updates AI labeling to ‘AI Info’ for enhanced transparency

Meta announced updates to their AI labeling and manipulated media policies across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, addressing concerns about accuracy and transparency.

Update to ‘AI Info’ Label

Meta is transitioning from the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI Info’ across their platforms. This change aims to provide clearer information about AI involvement in content creation.

The label will now offer more context when users click on it, clarifying that even minor AI-assisted edits, such as using retouching tools, may trigger the label.

Despite the label change, Meta continues to use technical metadata standards such as C2PA and IPTC to detect AI usage in photos. This means tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill, used for object removal, may still result in the ‘AI Info’ label.

The goal is to help users understand that AI may have been used, but not necessarily to create the entire image, according to Meta.

Handling Manipulated Media

Meta is also updating its approach to manipulated media on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads following feedback from the Oversight Board.

They will now apply ‘AI Info’ labels to a broader range of AI-generated content, including videos, audio, and images, to enhance transparency and context without overly restricting freedom of expression.

Meta will apply more prominent labeling to content that poses a high risk of deceiving the public, keeping it on their platforms unless it violates Community Standards, such as those against voter interference or violence.

Starting in July, Meta will halt the removal of content solely based on their manipulated media policy, aiming to familiarize users with the new labeling process.

Additionally, Meta plans to collaborate with industry partners to establish common standards for identifying AI-generated content.
