The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has announced a major partnership with MosChip Technologies and Socionext Inc. to develop an advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) Processor System on Chip (SoC) called AUM.
This mission, funded by MeitY and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), supports the development and deployment of HPC systems in R&D and academic institutions across India.
AUM Processor Development
This partnership is crucial for C-DAC’s goal of achieving complete indigenization in supercomputing. The AUM processor, built on the Arm Neoverse V2 CPU platform, will use 5nm technology from TSMC.
This processor aims to boost India’s self-reliance in HPC technologies. The project will use advanced packaging technologies to meet global standards and offer unique technological innovations.
Building on previous successes with the RUDRA compute node, Trinetra-Interconnect, and system software stack, this project aims to further reduce dependency on foreign technologies. C-DAC has engaged Keenheads Technologies, an Indian start-up, as the Program Management Consultant (PMC) to ensure smooth coordination and execution.
This collaboration underscores the importance of international cooperation, incorporating advanced technologies from MosChip Technologies in India and Socionext Inc. in Japan, to enhance the development of the AUM processor with cutting-edge technological practices.
By leveraging advanced technologies and fostering international partnerships, C-DAC aims to enhance India’s self-reliance in high-performance computing, positioning the country as a global leader in supercomputing.
Speaking about the announcement, Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, stated:
MeitY’s strategic policies have played a pivotal role in advancing the National Supercomputing Mission. We have achieved significant milestones, including the installation of advanced supercomputers, enhancements in computational capabilities, and breakthroughs in research.
Our efforts towards indigenization have surpassed 50% with server nodes, interconnects, and system software stack. Now, towards complete indigenization, we are focusing on developing the indigenous HPC Processor AUM.
The Government of India and MeitY are committed to propelling India towards a technologically sovereign future, leveraging supercomputing for national development and global leadership.
Speaking about collaboration, Shri E Magesh, Director General, C-DAC, said:
The collaboration between C-DAC and MosChip & Socionext to develop a cutting-edge HPC processor, designed to meet the evolving demands of High-Performance-Computing and related applications, illustrates the growing synergy between R&D and Industry. This joint effort represents a significant milestone in technological advancement, harnessing C-DAC’s expertise in Supercomputing technology alongside MosChip’s and Socionext’s capabilities in semiconductor design and manufacturing.
