Pixel 9 ‘Google AI’ features — Pixel Screenshots, Add Me, Studio surface ahead of launch

The Google Pixel 9 series is set to launch in a month. According to a report by Android Authority, Google will introduce new machine learning (ML) features branded as “Google AI” under the tagline “Discover Google AI at its best.” This will include features similar to Microsoft’s Recall.

Discover Google AI at its best

Google AI will feature both new and existing tools. For example, Circle to Search is already available on Pixels and some non-Pixel devices, and Gemini (AI assistant) is available on all Android phones.

New Features

Add Me: This feature ensures everyone is included in group photos. It sounds like an upgraded version of Best Take from the Pixel 8 series, which could change expressions and merge different takes. Add Me suggests Google is focusing on capturing what matters in photos with the help of AI.

Studio: Likely the same as the Creative Assistant app, Studio will integrate into the Pixels’ screenshot editor app to create stickers. It might also function as a generative AI image generator, similar to Apple’s Image Playground.

Google has been developing its own image and video-generating models, with ImageFX lets users try the Google Imagen 2 model, and VideoFX (in closed beta) extends this to video.

Pixel Screenshots: This feature is similar to Microsoft’s Recall. Unlike Recall, which captures everything you do, Pixel Screenshots only works on screenshots you take.

It adds metadata like app names and web links, which a local AI (likely the multimodal Gemini Nano) processes. You can then search for specific screenshots by their contents or ask a bot questions about them.

Launch Date

The Pixel 9 series event is scheduled for August 13th, with at least three variants expected. It remains to be seen if the best Google AI features will be exclusive to the flagship model.
