Google is gearing up to launch its next line-up of Pixel smartphones – the Pixel 9 series, and this line-up will reportedly feature a faster, more reliable ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, according to Android Authority.
This new technology will replace the Pixel 6’s optical under-display fingerprint sensor, improving the ability to read wet or oily fingerprints. The switch to ultrasonic sensors addresses issues with light levels and finger dryness that affected the previous optical readers.
Optical scanners, the older method, detect patterns and ridges by flashing light against the finger, but dirt or blemishes can interfere. In contrast, ultrasonic sensors provide greater accuracy by bouncing ultrasonic pulses off fingerprints, performing better even at night.
Reliable leaker Kamila Wojciechowska reports that the Pixel 9 will use Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) sensor, the same model used in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
The report notes that the new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will be included in all Pixel 9 models except the upcoming Fold 2, which will retain its power button-based fingerprint sensor.
More details are expected to be revealed during Google’s Pixel 9 hardware event on August 13th.
