Google TV Streamer set-top box reportedly in the works

Google is working on a new Google TV Streamer set-top box, moving away from the compact dongle design, according to 9to5Google.

The images show a set-top/table-top device with a slanted, pill-shaped design, a pill-shaped base resembling a small Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock, and power and HDMI cables at the back.

It is designed to be low-profile beneath the TV and may support Ultra Wideband-powered Tap to Cast, as seen with the Pixel Tablet.

The new remote is longer than previous models and features a D-Pad with back and home buttons, a generic microphone icon for voice input, and a home key with a raised bump and color.

The volume rocker is now on the front, and a mute button has been added. It also includes shortcuts for YouTube, Netflix, power, and a “Magic” or star button.

The report indicates that the new device will be named the Google TV Streamer, retaining the Google TV branding but dropping the Chromecast name.

It is uncertain whether Google will continue to sell the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), aligning with the earlier shift from Chromecast built-in to Google Cast.

Google has a major event on August 13, where they will unveil the Pixel 9 phones and Pixel Watch 3. The TV Streamer might also be introduced or announced for a later release. More details are expected as the event approaches.
