Nokia expands FWA portfolio with new 5G devices for North America

Nokia has announced new additions to its 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) portfolio, including an outdoor receiver and an indoor gateway with Wi-Fi 7, tailored for the North American market. These new products aim to address connectivity gaps across rural, suburban, and urban areas.

The Nokia FastMile 5G outdoor receiver features high-gain antennas with up to 10 dBi, supporting up to 300 MHz of bandwidth and 4 carrier aggregation. This compact device can be self-installed on windows, walls, balconies, or poles, enhancing signal strength in weak areas.

The Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 12 improves capacity and coverage by up to 35%, thanks to high-gain antennas (up to 8 dBi) and 8 receiver antennas. It supports up to 200 MHz of spectrum and utilizes tri-band Wi-Fi 7 to distribute high-speed 5G throughout the home.

The gateway runs on Nokia’s Corteca software, featuring cloud-based Wi-Fi optimization and device management that adhere to industry standards and EasyMesh.

Speaking about the new devices, Dirk Verhaegen, VP of Broadband Devices at Nokia, said:

Connecting end customers to high-speed internet via Fixed Wireless Access requires a variety of devices. Nokia’s FastMile solutions offer operators flexible options, delivering fast and reliable broadband to users in cities, suburbs, and even remote rural areas.

Commenting on the new devices, Dirk Verhaegen, VP of Broadband Devices at Nokia, said:

Jaimie Lenderman, Research Manager and Principal Analyst at Omdia, noted,

The number of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers in North America is expected to rise from 11.6 million in 2023 to 25 million by 2028. This growth is fueled by FWA’s cost-efficiency and quick deployment, particularly in areas where wired solutions are impractical.

However, challenges like signal interference, limited range, and line-of-sight requirements still affect widespread adoption. Innovations such as Nokia’s FastMile gateway are addressing these issues, helping operators provide high-speed FWA broadband services to users in all locations.
