OpenAI unveils SearchGPT AI-powered search engine prototype

OpenAI has announced SearchGPT, a new search engine aimed at competing with Google, following months of speculation. Currently in its prototype phase, SearchGPT is accessible only through a waiting list.

SearchGPT

In a blog post, OpenAI explained that SearchGPT combines its AI models with web information to provide quick and relevant answers with clear source links. Users can ask follow-up questions and interact naturally, as the system builds context with each query. The key features include:

  • Quick Answers: Provides timely responses to queries with up-to-date web information, including clear links to relevant sources.

  • Real-Time Data: Delivers current information from the web, ensuring clarity and relevance.

  • Conversational Search: Allows for follow-up questions, similar to a human conversation, building shared context with each query.

  • Visual Results: Includes images and videos for a richer understanding.

OpenAI plans to refine SearchGPT by gathering feedback from users and publishers, focusing on improving local information and commerce. The goal is to integrate the best aspects of the prototype into ChatGPT, according to OpenAI.

Collaboration with Publishers and Creators

OpenAI aims to support publishers and creators by helping users discover their content through a conversational interface. SearchGPT prominently cites and links to sources, ensuring users know where information originates and can explore more results via a sidebar with source links.

OpenAI has partnered with publishers to develop this experience and is open to their feedback. They have also introduced controls for publishers to manage their appearance in SearchGPT, independent of training OpenAI’s generative AI models.

Publishers can appear in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training. OpenAI is also gathering feedback from publishers and creators on how to best engage with AI search products and how their content performs.

Availability

The prototype is currently available to a select group of users in certain regions, including the U.S. Interested users can join the waitlist to try SearchGPT.
