Smallest Mac mini with M4 chips could launch this 2024

Apple is said to be preparing a major redesign of the Mac mini, its first significant update since 2010, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

The redesigned Mac mini, set for release later this year, will be significantly smaller than the current model, adopting a form factor similar to the Apple TV.

Mac mini M4 Details

The new Mac mini will offer two configurations: one with an M4 chip and another with the M4 Pro chip, both under the codename J773.

It will feature at least three USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and a power cable. The M4 Pro variant will support additional RAM and enhanced graphics capabilities.

Although the new Mac mini will have a smaller overall footprint, it may be taller than the existing model, which is 1.4 inches high. The device will retain its aluminum shell and is described as being “essentially an iPad Pro in a small box.”

Upgrades and Release Timeline

Apple is expected to refresh its entire Mac lineup with M4 chips over the next year. The Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro will transition to M4 chips later this year, while the Mac Pro, Mac Studio, and MacBook Air are anticipated to switch in 2025.

Availability and Pricing

The base model of the new Mac mini is scheduled to ship from suppliers this month, with a general release expected later this year. The high-end model is projected to be available in October.

Currently, the Mac mini M2 starts at USD 599. Although the new model may be cheaper to manufacture, it remains uncertain if these savings will be passed on to consumers, noted Gurman.
