Sony unveils ‘Gaming Virtualizer by 360 Reality Audio’ plugin to enhance Spatial sound in games

Sony Corporation has announced “Gaming Virtualizer by 360 Reality Audio,” a plug-in that simplifies creating spatial sound for headphones and integrates with Wwise.

Addressing the growing need for spatial audio in 3D games and with increased headphone use, it leverages Sony’s 360 Reality Audio technology to enhance immersive experiences in mobile and PC games.

Features of Gaming Virtualizer by 360 Reality Audio

Optimized Signal Processing

It is designed to perform signal processing for spatial sound playback through headphones, minimizing the load on game hardware. This ensures that even devices with limited processing power, such as mobile phones, can deliver an immersive spatial sound experience.

The software achieves a low-latency, natural sound field, making it easier to discern the direction of sounds, such as those coming from above or behind. The sound positioning is smooth, with minimal phase interference, even when the player’s viewpoint changes rapidly.

Integration with Wwise

The plug-in works with Wwise, the audio middleware used by many game developers. This integration simplifies the sound design process for both mobile and PC games, enhancing development efficiency.

The software allows for individual sound adjustments rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. For instance, crucial sounds like voices and effects can be spatialized, while ambient sounds can be processed differently. This flexibility supports a more precise and creative spatial sound design.

Validation by Game Developers

It is currently being tested by several game developers in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and China for implementation in their games.

As of August 2024, companies such as COLOPL, Inc., Cygames, Inc., GungHo Online Entertainment, Inc., Niantic, Inc., and SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. are validating the software.

The adventure game “PRINCIPLES PROLOGUE” by COLOPL, Inc. has already incorporated this software, allowing players to experience realistic spatial sound, such as footsteps, electrical noises, and cave echoes.

Overall, this tool leverages Sony’s 360 Reality Audio technology to enhance the gaming experience with immersive and dynamic spatial sound for both mobile and PC games, optimizing performance and sound quality.
