Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 16 series next month, with recent leaks from AppleInsider revealing new information about the upgraded camera systems and a rumored capture button for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus Camera Specs
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have dual rear cameras positioned vertically instead of diagonally.
The primary camera will include a 48MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and 2X optical zoom, while the secondary ultra-wide camera will offer 0.5X zoom with an improved f/2.2 aperture, up from f/2.4.
This enhancement is expected to improve low-light performance. Additionally, these non-Pro models are anticipated to support macrophotography for the first time.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera Specs
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will maintain three rear cameras: a wide, an ultra-wide, and a telephoto lens. The primary camera will retain a 48MP sensor with an f/1.78 aperture and 2X optical zoom.
Both Pro models will now feature a 5X telephoto lens, replacing the 3X telephoto lens from the iPhone 15 Pro. This telephoto lens will have a 12MP sensor and an f/2.8 aperture.
The ultra-wide lens on the Pro models will be upgraded to a 48MP sensor, matching the primary camera’s pixel-binning feature. It will have 0.7 micrometer pixels at full resolution or 1.4 micrometer pixels in quad-pixel mode.
Users will also be able to capture 48MP ProRAW photos with this lens, providing more data for post-processing.
New Camera Features
The iPhone 16 series will introduce a new image format called JPEG-XL, which will join existing formats such as HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRAW, and ProRAW Max.
Additionally, the Pro models will support 3K video recording at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision, an upgrade from the 1080P and 4K options available on the iPhone 15 Pro.
Capture Button
All four new iPhone models are expected to feature a new Capture Button located in the lower-right corner.
This capacitive button will activate only when touched to prevent accidental activation and will be used with camera-specific apps. Users will be able to select which app opens when the button is pressed.
The Capture Button will include a force-sensitive half-press feature for actions like locking exposure and focus. It is also expected to support functions such as zooming, applying filters, adjusting exposure, and controlling background blur.
With iOS 18, users will have the option to replace the camera shortcut on the Lock Screen with this physical control.
Launch Date?
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 series at an event scheduled for September 10. As more information becomes available, details about these new devices will continue to emerge ahead of their official launch.
