LG Innotek to supply folded zoom modules for iPhone 16 Series: Report

LG Innotek to be the exclusive supplier of folded zoom modules for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series. This continues their role as the sole supplier from last year. According to a report by TheElec, Sharp is not expected to supply camera modules for any new iPhones launching this year.

OIS Actuators Supply

The initial batch of optical image stabilization (OIS) actuators for the folded zoom will be jointly supplied by LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics. These actuators are essential for high-quality photography, as they enable the rapid and precise movement of multiple lenses.

Folded Zoom Details

The folded zoom is a periscope-type telephoto camera module that uses a prism to bend light and direct it to the image sensor. The advanced lens is expected to enhance the telephoto zoom range from 3x to 5x.

This technology, first introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, will be a key feature in the iPhone 16 series, particularly in the Pro and Pro Max models.

Initial Production and Supply Chain

The initial supply is estimated to cover 70% of the iPhone 16 series production by the end of the year.

Apple plans to order these initial quantities from companies with a proven record of stable production. Efforts to diversify the supply chain, aimed at reducing parts costs, will begin on a smaller scale in the fourth quarter.

Apple intends to manufacture the folded zoom modules for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models through Cowell or Foxconn in the fourth quarter, following the completion of initial production.

Diversifying the supply chain is expected to lower parts costs and facilitate broader application in future models. Reports also suggest that Apple may produce iPhone 16 Pro models in India this year.

More Camera Features and Launch date

Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide lens and a new capture button. The non-Pro models may receive enhancements such as a wider aperture for improved low-light photography, macro support, and a vertical camera arrangement.

More details are anticipated as the global launch of the iPhone 16 series approaches next month.
