Android 15 update for Pixel phones delayed until October: Report

The Android 15 update for Pixel phones will not be released next month, according to a report by Android Authority. The update is reportedly being delayed to improve its “stability.”

Update Patterns and Current Changes

Historically, Google has aligned major Android updates for Pixel devices with the release of the source code. This year, however, is different due to the merger of the Pixel hardware and AOSP teams.

Previous updates, such as Android 12, experienced a 15-day gap between the source code release and the Pixel update.

Expected Release Timeline for Android 15

The source code for Android 15 (AOSP) will be released next week, but the Pixel update may face a longer delay this year.

The unusual schedule, with the Pixel 9 series launching two months early and four new phones instead of two, means Android 15 wasn’t ready for the Pixel 9 series at launch.

According to the report, Google plans to release the Android 15 update for Pixel phones in October, possibly around the middle of the month. This may result in a gap of 30 days or more between the source code release and the Pixel OTA update.

The release date might change, but if it occurs in October, the update is expected to be stable, as the last beta has been available for nearly two weeks. If this timeline is accurate, the Pixel 9 series and other devices will receive Android 14 with the September 2024 security patch next month.

The final public stable release of Android 15, which includes features like Private Space, a new Material You volume panel, and widget picker tweaks, was anticipated in September after earlier expectations of August.

Eligible Devices for Android 15 Update

The Android 15 stable update will be available for the following Google Pixel devices:

  • Google Pixel 6a, 6, and 6 Pro
  • Google Pixel 7a, 7, and 7 Pro
  • Google Pixel Tablet
  • Google Pixel Fold
  • Google Pixel 8a, 8, and 8 Pro
  • Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Google has already begun testing the Android 15 QPR1 beta program, offering an early preview of what to expect in the December 2024 Pixel Drop.
