Google has announced five new updates for phones, tablets, and Wear OS watches. These updates include offline map access on Wear OS watches, advanced earthquake preparedness, and more.
Detailed Audio Descriptions with TalkBack and Gemini
TalkBack, Android’s screen reader for users who are blind or have low vision, now offers detailed audio descriptions of images.
This feature, powered by Gemini models, enhances the accessibility of digital images across various platforms, including product photos, social media, and personal galleries.
Circle to Search for Music
Users can now identify songs they hear without switching apps. By long-pressing the Home button or navigation bar, users can activate Circle to Search. This tool identifies the track name, artist, and provides a link to a YouTube video, allowing users to continue their current activity.
Read-Aloud Web Pages in Chrome
Android users can now have web pages read aloud in Chrome. This feature supports various content types, including blog posts and news articles. Users can choose their preferred voice, speed, and language for a customized listening experience.
Expanded Earthquake Alerts
The Android Earthquake Alerts System is now available across all U.S. states and six territories. This system uses crowdsourced technology to provide warnings seconds before shaking begins. After an earthquake, users can access tips on what to do next.
Offline Maps on Wear OS Watches
Wear OS smartwatch users can now access offline maps. By downloading a map to their phone, users can view it directly on their watch without needing cellular service. New shortcuts allow for voice search or quick location viewing on the watch face.

These updates are being rolled out to Android users. Availability may vary based on device type and location:
- TalkBack Image Descriptions: Available on devices supporting Gemini models.
- Earthquake Alerts: Expanding to all U.S. states and six territories.
