Apple to unveil new M4 Macs and iPads in the coming weeks: Report

Apple plans to unveil its first M4 Macs and new lower-end iPads at an upcoming event in the next few weeks. This announcement aligns with Apple’s typical fall release schedule, reported Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

MacBook Pro Updates

Apple will likely introduce updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips.

According to Gurman, no major design changes are expected this year. Significant updates, such as an OLED display and a thinner design, might not come until 2026. The new MacBook Pro lineup will include:

  • J604: An entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M4 chip.
  • J614 and J616: High-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with two pro-level M4 chip options.
iMac Refresh

The iMac is set to receive an update with the M4 chip, codenamed J623. This update will also likely include the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad transitioning from Lightning to USB-C.

Mac mini Revamp

The Mac mini is expected to be refreshed with M4 and M4 Pro chips. The new J773 Mac mini will be notably smaller, almost the size of an Apple TV, and will lack USB-A ports.

iPad Mini

The next-generation iPad mini, expected to be unveiled, will feature improvements such as a faster chip, enhanced front and rear cameras, a fix for “jelly scrolling,” and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The new iPad mini is projected to go into mass production in the second half of 2024.

Entry-Level iPad

New lower-end iPads are also anticipated, possibly including an iPad 11. Details on these models remain sparse, but they will be part of the event’s announcements.

Future Product Launches

Gurman notes that most new Macs are already shipping from factories, with some models, like the higher-end MacBook Pros and the M4 Pro Mac mini, scheduled for later.

M4 MacBook Airs are expected in the first quarter of 2025, a new Mac Studio in mid-2025, and a Mac Pro by the end of 2025, he added.
