Sony ECX350F 0.44″ FHD OLED Microdisplay for AR glasses with 10000 nits brightness announced


Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) has announced the release of the ECX350F, a new 0.44-inch Full HD OLED Microdisplay.

This display stands out for having the industry’s smallest pixels at 5.1 µm (approximately 5,000 ppi) and a peak brightness of up to 10,000 cd/m², setting a new standard in both pixel density and brightness.

The ECX350F is designed for augmented reality (AR) glasses, where a lightweight, compact design is essential without compromising display quality.

It features a novel OLED structure and microlenses to boost light emission from its small pixels. Despite its compact size, the display delivers Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080) and achieves brightness levels double that of earlier models.

This microdisplay solves a significant challenge in the industry—achieving high brightness with very small pixels. It contributes to making AR glasses lighter and more compact, while maintaining excellent image clarity.

1. Industry’s smallest 5.1 µm pixels and brightness up to 10,000 cd/m²: The ECX350F uses a newly developed semiconductor process to fabricate its 5.1 µm pixels, coupled with microlenses that improve luminous efficiency at this small scale. Its unique OLED structure balances driving voltage and luminous efficiency, allowing the display to reach its impressive brightness.

2. Miniaturization and reduced bezel size: The display minimizes its bezel (the non-display area surrounding the screen) by using a new circuit design, shrinking the bezel size on the long sides of the display to 1.14 mm on both the top and bottom.

This results in a short-side dimension of 7.99 mm, a 24% reduction compared to previous models. This contributes to thinner and lighter AR glasses without compromising resolution.

3. Variable black frame function: The ECX350F features a variable black frame function that allows video input below Full HD to be displayed at any position within the display’s active area.

This function reduces the need for external processing, enabling lower power consumption and lower latency, which enhances the overall performance of AR glasses.

The ECX350F OLED Microdisplay is priced at 40,000 Japanese Yen (USD 278 or Rs. 23,240 approx.). It is expected to begin shipping in October 2024.
