Samsung Developer Conference 2024: One UI 7, AI Integration, and New SmartThings features unveiled


Samsung Electronics showcased its latest innovations in software, services, and platforms at the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in California.

The event, themed “AI for All — A Decade of Open Innovation and Beyond,” highlighted advancements in personalized, secure AI experiences and platform development.

Key Highlights from SDC24

Personalized AI Experiences

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, outlined a future where Samsung devices deliver personalized experiences through multi-device AI integration.

Samsung aims to enhance user experiences by enabling devices to recognize users and adapt services based on their location. Han emphasized Samsung’s extensive device ecosystem, spanning mobile phones to home appliances, positioning the company to offer seamless, tailored AI solutions.

Daehyun Kim from Samsung Research discussed the company’s AI research direction, stressing the balance between innovation and security. He highlighted generative AI advancements in text, images, and speech, underscoring the importance of privacy in these AI-driven experiences.

AI Integration for Enhanced User Experiences

Samsung plans to expand its One UI interface beyond mobile devices, integrating it across all consumer electronics.

One UI 7 Beta: Samsung is broadening its AI capabilities across its entire product lineup, including the Galaxy A series. Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Executive Vice President of Mobile eXperience (MX) at Samsung, announced that Galaxy AI experiences will no longer be limited to flagship models.

Additionally, she previewed the upcoming One UI 7, which will feature a redesigned user interface, with a beta version set to be released for developers by the end of the year. Stable version is expected only in 2025.

AI Updates to Bixby Voice Assistant: Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant is evolving with new AI-driven capabilities designed to simplify interactions with home appliances through conversational commands.

Moon-soo Kim from the Visual Display (VD) Business explained how Samsung TVs will integrate AI features, allowing users to transfer AI-generated content from mobile devices to TVs using Samsung AI Cast.

In addition, Samsung’s Visual eXperience Transformation (VXT), launched earlier this year, offers advanced content management tools for B2B users. Alex YW Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display (VD) Business, highlighted how AI can streamline the organization and management of digital displays, boosting efficiency.

Responsible AI and Platform Innovation

Samsung also announced updates to its SmartThings platform, which uses AI to deliver personalized home management insights. Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President of the Device Platform Center, introduced “Home Insight,” a new feature that provides recommendations based on user patterns and seasonal trends.

Hobum Kwon from Samsung Research showcased advancements in the Tizen operating system, which now integrates AI models powered by neural processing units. Tizen OS offers up to seven years of upgrades, enhancing device connectivity.

Security remains a priority, with Samsung focusing on responsible AI use guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability, as highlighted by Shin Baik, Head of Security Assurance.

Collaboration with Developers and Partners

Throughout SDC24, Samsung emphasized its commitment to collaborating with developers and partners to drive AI innovation. The company plans to expand its AI ecosystem through open partnerships, ensuring it remains competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
