YouTube Shorts is getting 3 minute long videos and new creative tools

YouTube on Thursday announced new updates for YouTube Shorts, enhancing the creation and connection experience.

YouTube Shorts Updates

Extended Video Length for Shorts

Starting October 15, 2024, YouTube will increase the maximum length of Shorts from 60 seconds to 3 minutes.

This change, requested by creators, allows for greater storytelling flexibility and applies to videos that are square or taller. Videos uploaded before this date will remain unaffected. YouTube plans to enhance recommendations for longer Shorts soon.

Thumbnail Selection on Mobile: Users can now choose a thumbnail frame from their Shorts on both Android and iPhone. Additionally, they can add text and filters when creating Shorts.

Templates for Trending Shorts: Creators can easily use templates to create Shorts inspired by current trends. By tapping “Remix” on a Short, they can select “Use this template” to customize their content.

Access to YouTube Content: In the coming months, users will have the ability to access a wide range of YouTube content directly from the Shorts camera, allowing them to remix clips from videos and music.

Google DeepMind Integration: YouTube plans to introduce Google DeepMind’s Veo model, enabling creators to enhance their Shorts with extraordinary backgrounds and video clips later this year.

Shorts Trends Page: A new trends page for Shorts will help users discover popular content in their country, ensuring they stay updated on current trends.

Previewing Comments: Users will soon be able to see a preview of comments directly in the Shorts feed, allowing for a quick glimpse of the conversation.

Customized Shorts Experience: To improve user preferences, YouTube will introduce an option to “Show fewer Shorts.” Users can find this option in the three-dot menu of any Shorts grid on their Home feed.

Other Updates

Removal of Android Bulk Uploads: Starting mid-November 2024, users will no longer be able to upload multiple videos simultaneously from other apps on Android. Creators can still upload one video at a time through their Android devices. Bulk uploads on desktop will remain unaffected.

Profile Tab Merging: YouTube is merging the “Branding” and “Basic Info” sections into a single “Profile” tab, while renaming the “Layout” tab to “Home tab.”

Changes to YPP Suspension Appeals: Creators will receive notifications if their channel is scheduled for suspension due to policy violations. They will have 7 days to appeal without losing monetization. If an appeal is rejected, they can reapply after 90 days. Appeals can be submitted within 21 days of suspension if not submitted earlier.
