LG unveils world’s first 50% stretchable display

LG Display has revealed a groundbreaking stretchable display that can expand up to 50%, a new industry record. This 12-inch screen, shown at LG Science Park in Seoul, stretches to 18 inches while maintaining high resolution and full color.

This prototype surpasses LG’s 2022 version by more than doubling the elongation rate. It achieves this through advancements like a special silicon substrate and a unique wiring design. Using micro-LEDs ensures durability, allowing the display to be stretched over 10,000 times while withstanding extreme temperatures and shocks.

Stretchable displays are thin, lightweight, and can adhere to curved surfaces. This opens doors to applications in fashion, wearables, and mobility. LG showcased concepts like a stretchable automotive panel and a wearable display for firefighters.

This achievement stems from a national project led by LG Display in collaboration with industry and research institutes. The project, supported by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, aims to develop core technologies for next-generation displays.

Regarding the new display, Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, said:

We will continue to build a sustainable future display ecosystem through close cooperation between South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders.
