Apple’s next AirTag could launch in mid-2025

Apple is reportedly developing a new version of its AirTag, four years after the original device was introduced in 2021. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the second-generation AirTag, known by its code name B589, is anticipated to debut around mid-2025.

Key Features and Upgrades

Gurman shared that the upcoming AirTag is progressing through manufacturing tests and is expected to retain the design of its predecessor while offering three key improvements:

  • Better Range: Enhanced tracking efficiency.
  • Upgraded Wireless Chip: Improved performance.
  • Enhanced Privacy: More tamper-resistant, especially the speaker.

Gurman noted that the new model will make it harder to disable the built-in speaker, addressing concerns about misuse. Since its launch, some users have reportedly modified AirTags to remove the speaker, raising significant privacy issues and leading to lawsuits against Apple. The company appears committed to enhancing the device’s security to address these concerns.

Launch Timeline

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier reported delays in the second-generation AirTag’s production, pushing it from late 2024 to sometime in 2025. However, both Gurman and Kuo now confirm the device is expected to launch next year.

Other Apple Updates

The new AirTag is part of a broader lineup of Apple devices expected for release next year. Gurman highlights updates for the iPad Air, entry-level iPad, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, iPhone SE, and other products.

In addition, Apple’s smart home displays and software upgrades are set to debut alongside the usual updates to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro in 2025.
