Assam Semiconductor Plant to be operational by mid-2025

Earlier this year, the Union Cabinet authorized the establishment of three semiconductor units, including the Semiconductor ATMP Unit by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in Assam as part of the ‘Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India’ initiative.

The government already announced that it will be investing Rs.27,000 crore in the plant that has daily capacity of 48 million units, catering to automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and telecom sectors.

Now it has announced that the facility is projected for completion by mid-2025 and will generate 15,000 direct and 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs, contributing to regional economic growth in Assam and nearby areas.

This initiative aligns with the broader “Semicon India” program, a ₹76,000 crore plan launched in 2021 to boost domestic semiconductor production. The program incentivizes various sectors within the industry, from fabrication to packaging and testing, fostering a comprehensive ecosystem.

The Morigaon unit, along with other government-approved projects across the nation, signifies India’s commitment to reducing reliance on imports and securing its place in the global semiconductor value chain. These efforts are expected to drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to regional economic growth.
