Meta has announced a new Instagram feature allowing users to reset content recommendations on Explore, Reels, and Feed, providing a fresh start whenever needed.
Recommendations Reset on Instagram
Meta stated that the feature aims to create a “safe, positive, age-appropriate experience,” particularly for teens. This initiative reflects their commitment to offering tools that enable users to personalize their Instagram interactions.
According to Meta, the update will help teens gain greater control over what they see on the platform as their interests change. With just a few taps, users can reset their recommendations, clearing suggested content across Explore, Reels, and Feed.
Once reset, Instagram will gradually personalize content again based on new interactions with accounts and posts. Users can also review their following list during the reset process and unfollow accounts that no longer align with their preferences.
Collaborating with Experts
Meta is collaborating with Joanna and Clea from “The Home Edit” to guide parents and teens on managing Instagram accounts. The process is likened to organizing a home—encouraging users to periodically review and adjust their digital spaces to ensure content aligns with their interests.
Tools to Shape Instagram Experiences
Meta emphasized several existing tools to help users customize their Instagram feeds:
- Content Preferences: Users can refine recommendations by marking posts as “Interested” or “Not Interested.” Hidden Words can block content containing specified terms.
- Customized Feeds: Teens can switch to the Following Feed for chronological updates, or use the Favorites list to prioritize posts from selected accounts.
- Privacy Features: Tools like Close Friends for Stories and the “Your Activity” section enable teens to manage interactions and maintain control over their digital footprint.
Meta encourages teens to periodically review their following lists to ensure the accounts they follow remain relevant to their interests.
Ensuring Age-Appropriate Content
Meta reiterated its dedication to protecting teens from sensitive or mature content, stating the following:
- The platform has implemented stricter content guidelines for teen accounts, actively avoiding the recommendation of sensitive material and, in some cases, hiding it altogether—even if shared by followed accounts.
- A new page in Meta’s Transparency Center offers detailed insights into their layered approach to content moderation, including examples of restricted material and protective measures.
Availability
Meta confirmed that the Recommendations Reset feature will be rolled out globally soon.
