Google started offering 7 years of Android and security updates starting with last year’s Pixel 8 series, a major change from 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates in older models.
However, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series got the Android 16 developer preview last month ahead of the stable roll-out in mid 2025.
Now the company has confirmed that the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold will get 5 years of OS and security updates, and the company added that these may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.
Pixel devices that will get 5 years of OS updates
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel 7 Pro
- Pixel 7
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 6a
Google has mentioned that the 5 years will count starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 Pro started rolling out in October 2021, so 5 years will complete in October 2026, so it should get updates till Android 17.
However, the Pixel 6a started rolling out in the US from July 2022, so 5 years will complete only in July 2027, so if the Android 18 stable update rolls out in June 2027, it could get the update. Similarly, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro which went on sale in October 2022 should get updates till Android 18.
Google recently revealed that it will roll out Android 16 in Q2 2025, which is sometime before June, and another minor update in the second half of 2025, so there will be two updates next year.
