Airtel’s AI-powered spam solution flagged over 8 billion spam calls in 2.5 months

Bharti Airtel has announced the release of a detailed report highlighting the performance of its AI-powered spam solution, marking a significant milestone in network security in India.

Since its launch, Airtel’s network has flagged over 8 billion spam calls and 0.8 billion spam SMS messages, leveraging advanced AI algorithms to identify nearly 1 million spammers daily.

The proactive approach of Airtel’s AI-powered system has resulted in alerts to approximately 252 million unique customers about suspicious activities in just two and a half months, according to the company’s report.

Key Findings and Insights
  • Spam Identification and Reduction: The AI system has flagged 6% of all calls and 2% of SMS messages as spam, leading to a 12% reduction in the number of customers answering these calls.
  • Landline Usage: A concerning 35% of spam calls have been traced to landline telephones.
  • Regional Data: Delhi has seen the highest number of spam calls, with Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh following closely behind. The primary sources of spam SMS messages are Gujarat, Kolkata, and Uttar Pradesh.
Customer Targeting and Demographics
  • Gender and Age Patterns: Male customers are primarily targeted, with 76% of all spam calls aimed at them. The age group most affected is 36-60, accounting for 48% of spam calls. The 26-35 age group follows with 26%, while only 8% of calls target senior citizens.
  • Device Preferences: Users with devices priced between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 are the most frequent recipients of spam calls, representing 22% of all flagged calls.
Spam Call Timing and Trends
  • Peak Hours: Spam calls start from 9 am and peak between noon and 3 pm. Interestingly, the frequency of spam calls drops by 40% on Sundays.

Airtel emphasized that its AI-powered system enables real-time detection of spam, significantly improving network security. This initiative has positioned Airtel as the first Indian service provider to effectively tackle spam, enhancing privacy and convenience for users. The company also highlighted its role in setting new industry standards for comprehensive security measures.
