OpenAI expands ChatGPT access via phone calls and WhatsApp

OpenAI has introduced direct call and WhatsApp messaging support for ChatGPT in the U.S., marking the 10th day of its “12 Days of OpenAI” event, also known as “ship-mas.”

This new feature allows users to connect with ChatGPT by calling 1-800-ChatGPT or sending a WhatsApp message to the same number, which is available in any region where ChatGPT is accessible.

Calling and Messaging ChatGPT via Phone

1-800-ChatGPT is an experimental feature designed to provide easier access to ChatGPT without requiring an account. This service is available for users aged 13 and above. Users can now call or message ChatGPT via 1-800-ChatGPT, even from flip phones and landlines.

Usage Details and Limits

  • Phone Calls: Users can talk to ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes per month for free.
  • WhatsApp Messages: Users can send text messages, with daily limits based on system capacity.

Usage limits may adjust based on capacity, and users will receive a notice when approaching or reaching the limit.

Things to Note for Calling and Messaging
  • Environment: Calls work best in quiet settings, as background noise may be misinterpreted as prompts. Enabling noise isolation features, such as the “Voice Isolation” mode on iPhones, can help reduce interruptions. Headphones or earphones are recommended for better voice conversations.

  • WhatsApp Messaging: WhatsApp currently supports text-based conversations only. Features like ChatGPT search, image chatting, and personalization options such as custom instructions and memory are unavailable. The knowledge cutoff for this service is October 2023. Group chats are not supported.
Verifying ChatGPT on WhatsApp

To confirm you’re messaging ChatGPT on WhatsApp, check the phone number (1-800-242-8478) and look for the WhatsApp verified badge in the chat.

Data Retention and Privacy

OpenAI stores and may review your calls, call transcripts, and WhatsApp messages for a limited period to prevent abuse and ensure safety. However, these calls are not used to train OpenAI’s language models.

Users can access or delete their data according to OpenAI’s Privacy Policy. WhatsApp’s terms also apply for messages sent through the platform, and deletion requests should be directed to WhatsApp.

Why ChatGPT May Not Respond

There are several reasons why 1-800-ChatGPT might not respond, including safety measures or technical limitations. OpenAI is continuously improving the service and welcomes user feedback. In cases of policy violations or inappropriate content, users can report via the appropriate channels.

Unblocking and Access Issues

If a user’s number is blocked, it may be due to violations of OpenAI’s Terms of Use or calling from an unsupported region. A request can be submitted to resolve the issue.

Service Overview

This feature, developed in just a few weeks, uses OpenAI’s Realtime API and GPT-4o mini through integration with the WhatsApp API. OpenAI sees this initiative as a way to make ChatGPT more accessible, offering a simplified version of the service through familiar channels. More advanced features and personalization options are still available through traditional ChatGPT accounts (Web/App).

Availability

The 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478) service is currently available in the U.S. for phone calls (standard carrier fees may apply) and globally for WhatsApp messaging wherever ChatGPT is supported.
